A record 13 freefliers built a head-down formation over Atlanta
Skydiving Center on Saturday. The 13-way formation topped the old record of 10
and came on the last jump on Saturday.
The head-down record attempt was organized by Nate Gilbert, an ASC
cameraman, freeflier, coach and swoop competitor. Gilbert had
recently returned from helping set the 42-way Vertical World Record out west.
Area freefliers started showing up on Tuesday to warm up for the
Georgia record. By Friday, the group had nailed an 11-way. On Saturday, the
13-way group made 8 attempts, ending the day with the successful 13-way
formation recorded on video and film by TJ Landgren. On Sunday, the group of
8-10 made flocking, tracking and multiple-point jumps.
Congratulations to Georgia Head-Down Record holders Stephen Lee,
James Olaciregui, Jason Sanders, Sean Hennessy, Jim Harris, Joi Falk,
Sporto Johnson, Marshall Scalisi, Trevor Hill, Jon Pinyon, Travis Stewart,
Dereck Griffin and Nate Gilbert! Nice job! We're looking forward to even
better and bigger freefly formations later this year!
And freefliers weren't the only ones building formations and cranking points this past week. Alabama skydiver Art Nelson spent the week making more than 25 coaching jumps under the watchful eye of Mike Gruwell to
fine tune his belly skills for the summer. The weekend ended with some
nice multiple point 3-way, 4-way and 6-way skydives! Nick made his first
6-way belly dive with Tami, Ben, Mike, Brenda and Kevin on Sunday! The day
ended with an impromptu hit and chug contest at the X as Kevin and Mike
tied for first place, but Kevin clearly had the better accuracy as he slid
across the X. :-)
Marriage vows were exchanged Sunday in the Super Twin Otter at 14,000
feet by Kennesaw couple Tish Turner and Rafa Kucharski. While we have had
weddings by experienced jumpers at ASC, this was the first "tandem
jumper" couple to get married in the skies over ASC. The preacher conducted
the ceremony in the Super Otter starting at about 5,000 feet and finished
as the plane reached jump run at 14,000. The newlywed couple landed next
to each other for an after skydive/wedding hug and kiss. Welcome to the
world of skydiving!
May is set to go out with a bang at ASC as the CASA will fly in
Friday for the four-day Memorial Day weekend. The CASA and Super Otter will be
flying all weekend.
Performance Designs will be out all weekend with demo canopies. The
Georgia Skydiving League 4-way meet is Saturday and Team Flatline
will host a swoop meet over the ASC pond on Sunday. Party Saturday night
with the ASC open bar and Carbonezone food. Come bellyfly and freakfly
with us this weekend!
Lastly, don't forget $15 Wednesday and the Breakfast Club of Canopy Piloting Thursday at 8 a.m. See you then!
